EXCUSED ABSENCES:
As specified in California Education Code 48205, excused absences are only as follows:- Medical Appointments (doctor, dental, therapy, chiropractic, dermatologic, etc.)
- Illness
- Observance of religious holidays
- Attendance at funeral services for a member of the student’s immediate family
- One excused day for services conducted in California or three days if services are conducted out of state. “Immediate family” in this case means the student's parent/guardian, sibling, grandparent, or any other relative living in the student's immediate household
- Court appearances
- Colelge visits with completed form
- Please note: Junior and Senior students are eligible for up to 3 days of excused absence (per year) for off-campus college visits. The College Visit Permission Slip can be found HERE.
Note: A pupil absent from school under this section shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can reasonably be provided and, upon satisfactory completion within a reasonable period of time, shall be given full credit. The teacher of any classroom from which a pupil is absent shall determine the tests and assignments reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments that the pupil missed during the absence.
It is important for parents/guardians to remember that even though you report and excuse your student’s absence for an illness, AFTER 14 CUMULATIVE DAYS OF ABSENCE FOR ILLNESS (70 PERIOD ABSENCES), A DOCTOR’S NOTE WILL BE REQUIRED FOR EACH ILLNESS THAT FOLLOWS. Families will be notified via email if a student begins to accumulate excessive illness absences.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:
As specified in California Education Code 48205, unexcused absences are as follows:- Personal absences
- Ex: family vacation, DMV appointments, weddings, car trouble, alarm didn’t go off, missed bus/carpool (unless district provided), traffic, no parking, etc.
It is important for parents/guardians to remember that even though you report and verify your student’s absence, if the reason given for the absence does not meet the criteria outlined by the State of California in the EXCUSED ABSENCE section, the absence will be coded as PARENT VERIFIED (X Code), BUT WILL NOT BE EXCUSED and teachers are not required to provide students with assignments or tests for an unexcused absence. Families will be notified via email, if a student begins to accumulate excessive absences. For information on attendance coding in Aeries, please click here.
Students who are regularly absent or habitually truant will be referred to the Assistant Principal's Office. This process may include a referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) and the development of an attendance contact.
